Nokia Suite Data Package Manager

Nokia Suite Data Package Manager

And so my fear of Microsoft, taking over Nokia Mobile’s support site and us tinkerers would soon not be able to download the Lumia firmware for our devices via this trick, has come today.

I wanted to download a firmware for my Lumia 1320, which I gave to my Mum. Alas! No packages were available. So I tried downloading for my Lumia 1520. The result was the same, “Found 0 variant package(s) “. The same thing for my Lumia 1020 and 920.

Our only way to get the firmware of our Lumia is via the Nokia Software Recovery Tool, which is such a bummer because it only downloads the firmware specific for our Lumia’s product code. De-branding our Lumia’s now gets a little harder than usual. 😦

Is this the end of the line for us tinkerers who have the affinity to de-brand our Lumia phones? I hope not…

After the ‘CYAN’ Update, Microsoft, today announced the upcoming availability of ‘Denim’ Firmware for it’s Lumia devices. The said firmware will arrive sometime in the Q4 of 2014.

'Denim' is the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 Firmware update for the Lumia Devices.

‘Denim’ is the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 Firmware update for the Lumia Devices.

Here are the features to be expected in the said firmware release:

  • Lumia Camera – Replacing Nokia Camera, Lumia Camera is faster and more intuitive than before to make the best camera experience, even better.
  •  Speed – Pocket to capture speeds are superfast, and it only takes milliseconds going from shot to shot.
  •  Moment Capture – A long press of the camera button starts 4K-quality video recording at 24 FPS. With each frame at 8.3 megapixels, you can save individual frames as high quality still images.
  •  Rich Capture – Auto HDR and Dynamic Flash are now welcomed into the already-impressive feature set. Shoot first and adjust the camera settings later for that perfect photo.
  •  Improved image processing algorithms – Updated to give you clearer photos, even in lowlight.
  • “Hey Cortana” Voice Activation – Gone are the days of pressing the microphone button to wake-up Cortana. Simply say “Hey Cortana” while the phone is idle and Cortana will activate. This is possible thanks to the SensorCore technology.
  • Glance Screen – Compatible Lumia devices can now show more at a glance with Bing Weather, or Bing Health & Fitness data, in addition to time and date, notifications and application data.

Apart from the above Lumia exclusive features, Lumia Denim update will include the Windows Phone 8.1 update features.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update:

  • Cortana – The most personal digital assistant on the market will now be available in the UK and China as a Beta. India, Canada and Australia will have access to Cortana as a public Alpha. For US residents, Cortana now includes an improved natural language, car kit integration via Bluetooth for contacts, snooze reminders and calendar improvements.
  • Live folders – If you prefer to keep your apps or games organised, you can now put them into folders. Simply press, hold and drag an app over another to create a new folder on the Start screen. Each folder can be renamed by tapping on the text field above the open folder.
  • Apps Corner – Create a customised Start screen, where only specific apps or games are accessible. This could be particularly useful in the workplace if you’re issuing Windows Phones to employees.
  • SMS merge and forwarding – Select individual text messages to either delete them out of a messaging thread, or to copy and past them into a new message in order to forward them.
  • Snooze Times – It’s now possible to customise the snooze time within the Alarm app.
  • Consumer VPN – Maintain privacy and security when using data while connected to public Wi-Fi hotspots or even with your home Wi-Fi.
  • Mobile Web Site improvements in IE – Connect and browse even faster with improved downloading speeds on mobile websites.
  • Store Live Tile (US only) – The Store Live Tile displays featured apps and games that are the most popular in the Store, or most relevant for you.

As usual if your phone is running Windows Phone 8.1 Developers Preview, you will have to downgrade to 8.0, also known as the Black firmware, to be able to update to the official Cyan version OTA. You need the latest version of the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to downgrade your phone. The latest version is 1.4.3 which you can download directly from HERE.

The Windows Phone 8.1 CYAN firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 1520 started rolling out today. I just installed it to one of my Lumia 1520’s.

Here’s a trick to download official Nokia firmware without Navifirm+ 🙂

Things you need:

1. Latest version of Nokia Suite version 2013_13_4_4.exe

(UPDATE 15July2013: It appears some of you are having issues downloading the firmware using the Nokia Suite installer directly linked from Nokia’s server. My Guess is that Nokia may have updated the Nokia Suite rendering the ‘fix’ to no longer work. Kindly download the Nokia Suite Installer I’m using. It’s a 3-part installer from the links below).

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Single File: Mega Link (Recommended)

2. usergroupsconfiguration.cfg file

You can download the ‘usergroupsconfiguration.cfg’ file from HERE

Alternate LINK to both files.

Installation:

1. First install Nokia Suite. Do not run after the installation is finished.

Nokia Care Suite Installation

2. After Nokia Suite installs, copy and replace the usergroupsconfiguration.cfg file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Product Support Tool For Store 5.0 if you’re running a 64-bit version of Windows. Or C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Product Support Tool For Store 5.0 if on 32-bit.

Running Nokia Suite and Downloading the firmware:

1. Open Nokia Suite. And select ‘Product Support Tool For Store 5.0’ (Double Click)

Application Launcher

2. When prompted, select ‘CareSuite External’ then hit ‘Sign-in’ button.

3. From the Menu, select Tools, then ‘Firmware Download’

Firmware Download

4. Now enter the product code of your device, hit ‘Check Online’ button, to check the latest firmware version of your product code.

Download Firmware

5. Then ‘tick’ ‘Optional Content Files and ‘Download’ to save your firmware.

6. Wait a few minutes for your files to download 🙂

7. You may now manually flash your Nokia device with the firmware you just downloaded.

TIP:

– Your firmware should be stored in the C:\ProgramData\Nokia\Packages\Products folder of your hard drive.

– If you need to download a different firmware version for the same product code, I suggest you wait for your first download to finish, save all the downloaded files in a marked folder, then proceed with your next download.

WARNING & DISCLAIMER: This process is for experimental purposes ONLY. I will not be responsible for any damage your device may incur during the manual flashing. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

It was previously announced by Nokia that unauthorized access to its servers will soon be implemented come the end of January 2013:

“Nokia will close the connection to the Nokia
Firmware Repository during the month of January 2013 and will integrate access
control. Then, to access the Nokia Firmware
Repository will need to login at Nokia OnlineDuring the transition phase (December 2012-January
2013) and the open channel, both the subject with the restriction will be open,
but the open channel will be closed at the end of January 2013.”

Until today, everything was still working. When I tried to access NaviFirm+ to check for some firmware, I was greeted by this message right after I cleared its cache:

Unauthorized Fault

Unauthorized Fault

I dreaded this day will come… I can no longer manually flash my Lumia’s to my chosen firmware 😦

Is this move by Nokia practical?

Personally, I don’t see it benefitting most Nokia owners, me included, who have to endure waiting for the OTA updates while the rest of the owners of the same model already received theirs OTA. – I mean c’mon! We all know how we hate waiting for the updates OTA, even though we know the update to fix the issues in our Nokia phones is already sitting in the NaviFirm server!

OTA updates normally takes longer, sometimes never for some 😦

When Nokia first announced its plan to lock down public access to its NaviFirm servers, I didn’t get it. – I still don’t get it…

Dear Nokia, you’re such a party-pooper! #Boo

    UPDATE:

IF YOU GUYS STILL HAVEN’T CLEARED YOUR CACHE, D-O-N-T. Make sure you save that cache using WINZIP, or WINRAR or any compression utility. Then upload it somewhere and post a reply in this thread. Apparently if you still have the cache INTACT, you can still download from Navifirm.

Anyone got the cache with the latest 1314 for Lumia 920 RM-821? Please post it in the comments section. Thanks!
